Here is an interesting talk between Abel James and Vinnie Tortorich on the subject of exercise, ketosis and fat adaption.
Vinnie is an interesting person he was diagnosed with leukemia about 8 years ago. After speaking to an oncologist who told him that cancer cells needed sugar to survive he then went on a sugar-free high fat diet. He survived leukemia and is now not only in remission, but he is beyond being healthy by pushing himself to complete extreme feats of endurance. Like the time he hiked up Mount Whitney starting early in the morning for 14 hours just on a large breakfast of bacon and eggs.
Things I took from this podcast and video.
He does a regular podcast called the “Angriest Trainer” with co-host Anna Vocino
He writes books on fitness and his second book called “Fitness Confidential.” Was a best seller.
Athletes can produce great results will in ketosis.
He is a long time Hollywood personal trainer and some of his clients are celebrities.
He records an amazing 4 podcasts per week.
He believes most people are terrified of ketosis mainly because it is confused with diabetic ketoacidosis a very dangerous condition that can occur in type 1 diabetes, where the body does not have enough insulin in the body to use glucose as energy.
Vinnie explained that dietary ketosis happens when you reduce your carbohydrate intake for a few days, and your body then uses your fat stores as an energy source.
He invented and adopted a no sugar no grains diet to beat leukemia and is currently in remission.
Dietary ketosis helps to burn fat.
He tells the story of two rowers, couple Sami Inkinen and Meredith Loring who rowed 2,400 miles from San Francisco to Hawaii just on fats. Amazingly they carried the 1,000,000,000 calories worth of fats they needed onto the boat. They set a record time and beat off 4 man teams. Also their recovery was amazing as they were up dancing the very next night.
Vinnie would pack, coconut oil or MCT oil, dehydrated meat (not jerky as too high in sugar) and cruciferous vegetables.
Day to day Vinnie eats loads of vegetables, adds in grass-fed meats and fish.
Vinnie recommends a good fish oil taken twice a day.
Vinnies top advice is to stop eating sugar, grains and artificial sweeteners.
