What are Triglyceride’s?

Triglycerides are a molecule that is made up of three fatty acids which are held together by a molecule of glycerol.

Triglycerides are the molecules of fat that are held in our bodies cells, where they are kept until needed for energy.

Their role is to provide energy to the body when needed. Put really simply triglycerides are stored in the cells when there is surplus energy in the body, for example after eating, and they are used up when the body requires energy for example during the night when you are asleep.

If your fasting triglyceride levels are too high your doctor may explain this could indicate that you have metabolic syndrome, particularly if you have other symptoms like being overweight, having high blood pressure and low LDL cholesterol.

Other causes include overeating carbohydrates, drinking excess alcohol, underactive thyroid and kidney disease, but your doctor is the best person to diagnose your particular health problem.

A normal triglyceride result is less than 150 mg/dL, high is 200 – 499 mg/dL and very high would be anything over 500 mg/dL.
